Check Out This Interview I Did With AllHipHop.com...
Hiding in Hip-Hop Author, Terrance Dean’s Mogul
Wednesday, June 29, 2011 7:37 AM By Biba Adams
Right before the release of his bestselling book, Hiding in Hip-Hop: On the Downlow in the Entertainment Industry from Music to Hollywood (2008), Terrance Dean sent shivers through the industry with the fear that he was about to “out” some of black entertainment’s most popular artists. But, cleverly, the book was full of blind items and did not name any names, prompting bloggers and readers to play guessing games. This June, Dean returns with his first novel, Mogul. Centered on the life and career of a rap mogul, Big A.T., who runs a successful label with some of biggest stars in the Hip-Hop industry, including his lover, superstar rapper, Tickman. The book is interesting and relatively realistic in it’s portrayal of the industry, Big A.T., is a character that the reader can love, hate, and love again. But, how is Mogul another blind item? Is the Hip-Hop industry ready for love scenes between men? Is Hip-Hop music and culture ready for an openly gay artist? AllHipHop.com talked to Terrance Dean about Hip-Hop and homosexuality.
AllHipHop.com: What have you been doing since Hiding in Hip-Hop.
Terrance Dean: I’ve written two other books, including Straight from your Gay Best Friend: The Straight-Up Truth about Relationships, Work, and Having a Fabulous Life, worked on some television and book projects. And I just finished Mogul which I am getting ready to tour with.
AllHipHop.com: What was the motivation behind Mogul?
Terrance Dean: Like in Hiding in Hip-Hop, which was my memoir, I really wanted to tell the story from a different perspective and a different character. I wanted to show this gay sub-culture that really does exist, that I think people are more aware of now.
AllHipHop.com: Are the characters in the book based on real people?
Terrance Dean: All the characters in Mogul are inspired by people that I know. Big A.T. is a combination of two people that I know. His character spoke a lot to me because I knew that character and I knew that story. I hope that when people read the book that they don’t try to match the characters with people. Look at the story, look at the plot. I really want people to think, ‘What would you do?’ We find Big A.T. caught in so many situations and challenges. He knows who he is on the inside, but there are so many outside forces that prevent him from being his true authentic self.
AllHipHop.com: Do you think in any way that the book perpetuates gay stereotypes?

MOGUL Book Review With MTV UK...
HAN'S HIP-HOP REPORT: 'MOGUL' BOOK REVIEW
Submitted by Joseph Patterson on Wed, 06/22/2011 - 13:08
"I hear my breathing. It’s loud, hard and fast. I don’t know why I’m doing this, but I have to go through with it. I’ve summoned every entertainment reporter and photographer to the Ritz Carlton this morning for a news conference. Hell, every media outlet across the country received the press release..."
There are few situations left that would send shockwaves through the urban music industry. The death of a legendary artist? Nope! Sorry, Tupac. Sorry, Biggie. I mean, you’re both sorely missed but we handled. The retirement of a superstar? C’mon Jay-Z, precisely who you thought you were kidding I do not know. No, there is only one scenario that could shake the rap world to its very core: the public announcement of one of the hip-hop elite’s homosexuality.
This controversial, but very plausible, subject matter provides the narrative framework for Terrance Dean’s latest book, 'MOGUL'. The novel is a gripping and fast-paced journey through the exhilarating evils of the entertainment industry, demonstrating Dean’s progress as a fiction writer. His characters are likeable and relatable – regardless of the reader’s own background or sexuality – and as the story draws to its dramatic climax, he evokes empathy for the protagonist’s plight.

Radio Interview On The Michael Eric Dyson Show On NPR Discussing MOGUL...
Terrance Dean has written several books on the image of ultra masculinity in hip-hop and the often contradictory gay lifestyles bubbling beneath the beats. Now the journalist and educator has turned his talents to fiction with the new novel Mogul, which explores this lifestyle through the eyes of a rising hip-hop big shot. He discusses the book and this little-known and often hidden world within the entertainment industry.

MOGUL Book Excerpt From The Advocate Magazine...
With the publication of Hiding in Hip-Hop, an expose that set the entertainment industry on its ear, Terrance Dean gave voice to many African-American men in Hollywood and in hip-hop who conduct clandestine same-sex relationships. Through revealing yet discreet anecdotes about his liaisons with the rich and famous who were also on the “DL,” Dean’s provocative and candid account brought to light a hidden gay subculture. Now his debut novel, Mogul, colorfully illustrates the story of Aaron “Big A.T.” Tremble, who falls for the most popular boy on high high school basketball team, George. At the end of high school, George is shipped off to California to play college ball, leaving Big A.T. heartbroken. He turns to music and finds himself at the center of one of the most successful hip-hop labels in the industry.
Mogul follows Big A.T., who accumulates millions of dollars in the bank, real estate holdings, luxury cars, and countless fans, but his love affair with a hip-hop artists hinders him from living the life he truly wants to live.

Check Out This Video -- MOGUL: A Novel...
I hope you all will take the time to view the video of me discussing my new novel, MOGUL.
This book is truly a work of inspiration based on real life events, people, and experiences. However, it is a work of fiction. I'm so proud and excited about its release. The book is everything that makes for good literature - sex, love, lust, deception, drama, happiness, success, and desire.
I hope you will share in this moment with me as I celebrate my new novel, MOGUL. I couldn't have made it this far without each and every one of you. The love and support you've shown me is truly empowering, inspiring, and compelling.
Let's keep striving toward love, acceptance, and respect. And, together, we can do anything. And, I mean anything.

Check Out My Interview With Ms. Magazine...
Down-Low Men and Self-Protecting Women
June 9, 2011 by Ebony Utley
Terrance Dean’s debut novel Mogul (Atria Books) tells the story of entertainment music producer Aaron “Big A.T.” Tremble’s struggle to come to terms with his sexuality. After compromising photos of Big A.T. and another man are sent to his girlfriend, Big A.T. must decide whether to publicly reveal his sexuality and risk compromising his success.
In his first interview about Mogul, Dean tells Ms. readers how homophobia impacts relationships between men and women.
Why tell the story from multiple points of view?
Terrance Dean: I wanted readers to see each individual character and the interpretation of their experience. Big A.T. is the main character, then Craig who is a blogger/journalist and then there’s Jasmine, the girlfriend of Big A.T. who’s telling her perspective. I think when women see her experience they’ll realize her naïveté and how blind women can be when they give their hearts and minds to someone. I especially thought it would be powerful to see the main character’s journey and struggle. A lot of times people don’t understand. They say, “Why don’t a lot of down-low men or gay men just come and out and be who they are?” without realizing some of the internal issues as well as the outside forces that prevent them from coming out.

A GREAT REVIEW FROM BOSSIP...
Sizzling Summer Reading: “Hiding In Hip-Hop” Author Terrance Dean Set To Release Juicy New Novel ‘MOGUL’ About Down-Low Entertainment “Family”
In his new novel “MOGUL” Terrance Dean envisions the day when one of the top producers and moguls in hip-hop goes public with his gay lifestyle. When we at BOSSIP received our copy three weeks ago we couldn’t put the juicy page-turner down. Dean set it off a few years back when he released his “Hiding In HipHop” memoir, that offered up a few teases about the DL folks in hip-hop, and this book, which features extremely erotic sex scenes (of both the hetero and homosexual variety) is sure to have tongues wagging over which artists may have inspired some of his characters.
Here’s a synopsis:
We’re not selfish so we decided to share a few excerpts with you. (Ed. Note *The images chosen to run with this post are not directly associated with the book in any way. They are just there to help the folks who like pictures with their words.*)

Here’s a synopsis:
Aaron “Big A.T.” Tremble, an athletically gifted teenager from Brooklyn, discovers he is attracted to George, one of the most popular basketball stars at his school and soon, the two become embroiled in a secret romance as they juggle studies, gym practice and girlfriends. A year later during they senior year, George announces he is moving to California for college. While Big A.T. is heartbroken, he pours himself into his music to forget George and begins producing for local rappers in his neighborhood. After a chance meeting with the retired kingpin of hip-hop, Larry “Pop” Singleton, Big A.T.’s life is forever changed as he becomes Pop’s protege and a member of the “family” — a network of secretly gay men in the industry who will eventually become instrumental in helping him launch his own music label. Attracting the biggest names in the industry, Big A.T. has the Midas touch with millions of dollars in the bank, real estate holdings, luxury cars and countless fans. He’s built a bona fide empire but along the way, Big A.T. falls hard for one of his artists, the sexy Tickman. They love each other but know they must keep their relationship a secret and to keep any press speculation about their sexuality at bay, each becomes involved in relationships with high profile women. However, unbeknownst to Big A.T., a journalist seeking revenge against hip-hop power brokers and looking for his 15 minutes of fame obtains compromising photographs that threaten to expose the truth about Big A.T. Will his life crumble in the wake of a huge scandal or will Big A.T. survive — and out of the closet forever?Wild stuff right? Gay men in hip-hop NO WAY, that’s not really going on is it? Anyway, Terrance is being compared with the late E.Lynn Harris and we have to admit the book is very well written and holds your attention throughout.
We’re not selfish so we decided to share a few excerpts with you. (Ed. Note *The images chosen to run with this post are not directly associated with the book in any way. They are just there to help the folks who like pictures with their words.*)

Today Is, "Straight From Your Gay Best Friend" Advice Day....
Dear Gay Best Friend,
I have been in my current “situation” for 2-1/2 years. He was leaving me in the past for his children’s mother. Then he would leave her to come back with me. Like the fool I have been, I kept accepting him back. He would stay for 6 months and then go back to her he would go.
Last year in May I quit my job for him (knowing that I should not have done that my mother taught me to stand on my own which I have always done), this was the first time I depended on a man. Well, in July he left me again! This was the worse feeling. I had no job. I was depending on my student loan rebate to take care of me and my girls. Then I finally got another job (of course it pays peanuts, barely making ends meet).
Well, to make the long story short in October he called me begging and pleading to come back I stood firm for a minute, but I accepted him back again. Things were well. I still felt skeptical but he really stopped dealing with her to the point she won’t let him see his children. Well, this past weekend, he knit-picked with me to leave and go who knows where. At this point I am sick of the crap. He calls me on Monday and says, “So, are we really going to see other people?” I said, “Look, we are done. Don’t call this phone,” and I hung up. I filtered all his emails, phone calls. I feel as though he takes me for granted. He then emails me at work (I didn’t filter the emails at work), telling me he needs me etc. I sent him a very long response and told him that I just can’t do this anymore. It’s not good for me or my daughters. I said a whole lot more.
Why do I feel so bad? He keeps emailing me saying he needs me and he is sorry and that he is not seeing anyone else etc. Why do I feel bad? Why do I miss him? I know u will say I am a fool and other types of things. But I just want to know why I feel so bad? – Feeling Bad

I have been in my current “situation” for 2-1/2 years. He was leaving me in the past for his children’s mother. Then he would leave her to come back with me. Like the fool I have been, I kept accepting him back. He would stay for 6 months and then go back to her he would go.

Today Is "Straight From Your Gay Best Friend" Advice Day...
Dear Gay Best Friend,
I need your expert advice on a problem that’s beginning to fester.
My husband and I have been married for 10 years. Three years ago we decided to separate because we simply could not get along. We disagreed on everything from finances to the best way to discipline our child, so we split but remained very close. While separated, we both dated other people but we spent holidays together and took vacations as a family. Fast forward to present day and we’re a full-time, cohabitating married couple again. This was mainly hubby’s decision; I simply went along with it for the financial perks & benefits. Don’t get me wrong though, I do love the man. So far it’s been 4 months being “married” again and things are great for the most part – - – except when it comes to sex. In a nutshell, I hate having sex with my husband now and wouldn’t mind if I never had to do it with him ever again!
While we were separated I had a relationship with another man who embodied all the physical traits a woman like me (and a few men I know,) could ask for. In addition to having the good looks of Blair Underwood with a touch of Lance Gross, the man was 6’4”, 220lbs of pure chocolately goodness! He kept himself in great shape, was college-educated, home-owner, remained gainfully employed and childless! To add the icing to the cake, sex with him was nothing short of VANGLORIOUS!!!(tongue-in-cheek). The man came equipped with 9 inches of instant gratification and was a master at his trade. He made my body hum! I’m by no means inexperienced and I can say hands down, he was the best lover I had in all my years of sexual exploration.
Now I’m back with my husband and can’t even trick myself into having sex with him. When I do muster up the nerve to have sex (which has only been twice in 4 months) it has to be doggy-style so I don’t have to see his body. For years I faked it with hubby, and now I can’t even put on the act anymore. I just lie there like a dead fish waiting for him to finish while I’m making a grocery list in my head. I’m completely turned off by his extra weight and small member. Yeah, yeah, I put up with it for years with no complaints, but that was before the Chocolate Man Wonder (CMW) came and rocked my world. No amount of fantasizing or sex toys can amount to what CMW delivered naturally. Now I don’t know what to do. On one hand, I want to stay with hubby because he loves and spoils me to death. On the other, I want to continue having sex with CMW. I’m on the verge of discussing having an open relationship with my husband, but
I’m not sure that will go over well. I really want the best of both worlds – I want to continue being treated like a Queen by my husband, but I also want to continue having mind-altering sex with my lover. What’s a girl to do? – Ms. I Want To Eat My Cake. NOW!
P.S. Just ordered your book from Amazon, can’t wait to read it.

Today Is, "Straight From Your Gay Best Friend" Advice Day...
Dear Gay Best Friend,
I have worked for a company called, Cleo Inc., for more than six years and yesterday they announced that they were closing the doors after almost 60 years after they started. They reported that they were moving its company to foreign suppliers and will be shutting down the company which employs about 600 workers.
My problem is we (meaning employees) never seen it coming and I am now 7 months pregnant and without a JOB! The father of my child and I are engaged and living together. He has graduated college, has a degree in engineering and he works 2 jobs. My thing is I still made more money than him even though he has 2 jobs. I feel like it would be such a burden on him to carry out all the expensive bills and debt we have alone. Due to my illness during my pregnancy I will not try to seek employment at this moment, instead I will seek employment after the baby is born, and Lord who knows when the next time I could get employed in this bad economy!!
To take some of the burden off my man, I am willing to go into the savings we have for the baby if that is what it takes to keep us from going to the slaughter house. I feel very sad about my company leaving, it has affected many people financially, mentally and I pray that the other former employees will get through this and have a blessed life. Is there a lesson to be learned here or is this just a misfortune? THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD! – My Job Is Gone

Art Imitating Life or Vice-Versa? You Tell Me...
When I tell you all that I couldn't have written a more prophetic book, then I don't know what to say. Check out this statement from Funkmaster Flex from his website in regards to DJ/Producer Mister Cee's guilty plea for sexual lewd acts with a man:
http://www.inflexwetrust.com/2011/06/01/mister-cee-appears-in-court-and-enters-plea/
Now, I want you to check out what I wrote in my upcoming novel, MOGUL. I wrote something that Funkmaster Flex says & does after something huge happens to one of the main characters in my book. Is this art imitating life, or vice-versa?
You tell me!
June 14th it all goes down. MOGUL will be in stores everywhere!

Today Is "Straight From Your Gay Best Friend" Advice Day...
Dear Gay Best Friend,
I love the way you put women in their place when it comes to compromising situation. I love the advice that you give and it’s absolutely on point. Just by reading some of the questions women ask you have made me step out of my situation and look into from the outside. I met a 28-year old guy about 19 months ago and I really fell deep for him. He started spending so much time with me and making me feel like he wanted to go farther, but that was an outright lie. I found out that his son’s mother was pregnant for a 2nd time. He was still sleeping with his ex-girlfriend. The ex had a restraining out on him.
He was living in his sister’s basement and then to top it off he can’t read. I started helping him read and going to Sylvan’s Learning Center with him. I just really put my all into him. He constantly gives me his azz to kiss. He won’t answer my calls and then he still sneaking and sleeping with everyone. I would let him drive my car and I would babysit his daughter when he worked on the weekends. I don’t have small children my sons are 17 and 18-years old.
I keep asking him does he want to stop dealing with each other and I feel like I have been used. I left my mate of 26 years that I have been with since I was 11-years old and now he doesn’t want me since I decided to deal with this fool. I NEED YOUR ADVICE ASAP!!! – 37-Years Old In Trouble
