Polk Awards: Reporters at Risk

David Rohde, NY Times correspondent wrote an outstanding and remarkable five-part series on his own kidnapping by the Taliban in Afghanistan and his experiences while being held prisoner in Pakistan for over seven months until his daring escape with another prisoner. Rohde won a Polk Award for his reporting on this ordeal in the Times. The series also revealed shocking details of a Taliban 'mini-state' in Pakistan and conveyed the hatred young jihadis harbor for the West.
Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes reporter shares a Polk Award with colleagues Charlie Reed and Kevin Baron for a series on how the Pentagon used a PR firm to profile journalists and steer them toward positive coverage of the war in Afghanistan. Days after the report came out, this initiative was cancelled.
