Hip Hop Is Not Doing So Well...

So much to catch you all up on. It's been crazy since Thursday evening.

I participated on a panel discussion with 98.7KISS FM and The Mind, Body, and Soul on Thursday evening. It was held at The Bronx Museum of Art. The purpose of the event was to help inform, educate, and empower residents in The Bronx with information to heal The Mind, Body, and Soul. It's very impactful. There were several screening stations to test for high blood pressure, diabetes, and HIV. And can I tell you that the place was PACKED! People came out to get tested, and to be informed. It was a beautiful sight. And, please remember people to get tested to know your HIV status. Tell your friends, family, and co-workers to get tested. New York has the highest infectious rates of HIV/AIDS cases. Come on People, we've got to do better!

The man I'm in the picture with is JL King. He is the author of, On The Down Low, On The Up and Up, Colored People Time, and his newest fiction work, Love On A Two-Way Street.

JL is a really nice and cool guy. JL and I were part of the panel discussion which included health experts, a psychologist, and a woman whose husband is living with AIDS. I heard a lot of things about JL when his first book, On The Down Low, hit the scene. I won't repeat what I heard, but nothing was positive. So, I had a preconceived idea of who he was based on what a lot of people told me what they thought of him.

My experience with him was much love. I was totally surprised and shocked! He's warm, funny, and very down to earth. We had a great time talking before and after the panel discussion. He's a very smart man and definitely a business man. It was truly a pleasure meeting him and participating with him on the panel discussion. Everything I heard about him I threw it all out. I let it go. JL King is definitely cool people.

Also, as a special treat, singer and Broadway actress, Elisabeth Withers performed and participated on the panel discussion as well. She was in The Color Purple on Broadway where she played Celie. Elisabeth got some pipes on her. This was my third time being with Elisabeth. A very good R&B singer friend of mines introduced me to her originally. Then, while I was in Cancun in May I ran into her again. Yeah, Elisabeth is a beautiful woman and she is very down to earth as well.

Well, on Friday I hit the road to continue my book tour. The first stop is my hometown, Detroit. Man, I love Detroit. I grew up in the hood and I appreciate everything it taught me. If you don't know anything about Detroit here a few things you should be familar with: We love some Coney Island. These are restaurants located on nearly every damn block which serve up some of the best hot dogs with chilli, mustard, and raw onions. And, chilli fries with ketchup. This sh*t is addictive. I get 'em everytime I come home.

Then there's the cities greeting, What up Doe! When you are in Detroit that's the greeting you give some one.

We love to dance and got our dances. And trust me when we leave the state of Michigan and go anyplace in the world, we can always spot another Detroit person by the way they dance. Here are a list of our dances that only Detroit people know: Hustle, Ballroom Hustle, Pop, Snake, Git, and The Errol Flynn. LOL!! There are others, but these dances are our signature staples.

Well, Friday evening I had a booksigning at Borders on Woodward Ave. in downtown. I had a great time and my fellow Detroiters have shown a lot of love everytime I have come home. After my signing my frat brother invites me to a concert, Return Of The Legends. It was being held downtown at Chene Park in conjunction with the local radio station WJLB FM 98. He works as an executive with Chene Park. Whenever I am in town he gives me an All-Access pass to attend. So this time I was game. On the roster was Scarface, Foxy Brown, and Nas. I knew this was going to be off the chain. Besides, before I came to Detroit I spoke with one of my boys who I have been friends with since high school. He was also going. He was hyped about the concert as well.

Well, this is the state of Hip Hop in Detroit. I purposely climbed to the top of the arena so I could take this picture. The concert was scheduled to start at 8pm. It didn't start until 8:45pm. I guess they were hoping more people were going to come, but unfortunately they didn't. I keep hearing that Hip Hop is suffering. The music is garbage. And of couse the recession, but this was crazy!

Scarface took the stage first. In his huge over-sized blue t-shirt with a big H on it, and his signature fitted hat, Scarface strolled on the stage with his drink in hand and ripped it. The crowd, the few of us there, went crazy. Especially when he went into "I Never Seen A Man Cry" and "My Block" and "Mind Playing Tricks" It was BANANAS!!!

After he left the stage it was Foxy's turn. I knew she was going to bring the house down. Who hasn't awaited for Foxy's return, but wait, she doesn't have a new album. She doesn't have any new material. Well, that shouldn't matter because she has a catalogue of music, right?

Well, she came out in a green spaghetti strap dress, and her signature Inga hair, but everyone around me kept saying how chunky she looked. Is she pregnant? People were asking. I wasn't sure, but I was waiting for her to spit fire and remind the crowd why she was Foxy Brown. Well, she started rhyming only doing snippets of her songs, well other people's songs she has been featured on - Jay Z, Ja Rule, Dru Hill, Sisqo, and Nas. Hmmmm, I thought. She will do one of her own signature songs like "BK Anthem" or "Hot Spot" and maybe even "Ill Na Na" But, before she could get to any of her own songs, the audience grew restless and started to boo her. Yes, they booed Foxy.

The last act, Nas, saved the night. Hands down Nas kills 'em. He was a showstopper and I'm glad he was the redeeming act of the night.

Well, I'm off...enjoy the rest of your Labor Day Weekend.

When "The Girls" Get Locked Up...

The Timberland Boot Award goes to...

Chart topping rapper Da Brat was sentenced to three years in prison today (August 22), after being charged with assault for hitting a woman in the face with a bottle of rum. The prison sentence stems from a November 2007 incident, in which Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris, argued with Shala Stevens, a waitress working at Jermaine Dupri’s Club 72. Stevens, a budding model, Atlanta Falcons cheerleader and actress, suffered deep lacerations to her cheek and swelling to her forehead. Stevens, who is represented by power attorney Willie Gary and CK Hoffler in a civil lawsuit, also suffered permanent disfigurement and mental distress as a result of the attack. Stevens was also forced to pull out of an upcoming role on Tyler Perry’s sitcom House of Pain due to the injuries she sustained in the assault. Da Brat must also serve seven years of probation and complete 200 hours of community service.

Police arrested popular actress Felicia "Snoop" Pearson on minor drug charges on Wednesday (August 20), after she was detained for refusing to cooperate as a witness in a murder trial. Members of Baltimore's Homicide Unit entered Snoop's Northeast Baltimore home with a "body attachment" warrant, which allowed authorities to arrest and detain her. Once inside, they also found two cigars filled with what is allegedly marijuana as well as marijuana residue. Police may detain Snoop until September 16, when the murder trial of her associate Steven James Lashley begins. Lashley is accused of stabbing three men - one fatally - outside a Baltimore New York Fried Chicken, allegedly in Snoop's defense, after an argument inside of the restaurant. According to The Baltimore Sun, a warrant was issued for Snoop on July 1, after she missed an April 21 trial date.

In my book, Hiding In Hip Hop, I discuss in detail the trappings fame, success, and notoriety does to a young person in the entertainment industry. This business has all the trappings for young urban kids seeking to better their lives, however, Hollywood and Hip Hop can do damage to young people who haven't been schooled on the "Business" of Entertainment.

I award these two ladies with The Timberland Boot Award because sometimes you have to learn how to let go of the past. Move beyond the hood mentality and grow up. Sometimes you have to let go of the Timberland Boots, and dress and act age appropriate. You are in the business of Entertainment. Young people, your fans, and your family members look up to you. It's no excuse for ill-behavior. If the people in your camp are not helping you to grow, move up, and tell you when your sh*t does stink, then it's time to get some new people in your camp. So, when Hip Hop artists do things and don't think there are repercussions behind it, "GROW UP, YOU ARE AN ADULT" - You will get The Timberland Boot Award.

Someone Has Been A Bad Boy...

Philly and Boston....

I want to thank all the men and women who came out to the booksignings in Philly and Boston.

First, I was in Philly on Monday, Aug. 18th, at Giovanni's Bookstore. The men who attended were so gracious and asked great questions. Thank you to everyone who came out - there where at least 15 people there. Giovanni's Bookstore is a really nice place to get some great books in Philly. I loved the store. The vibe was electric and very eclectic. It sits perched in the Gayborhood Community. It's convenient and swank. So, if you are ever in the area or in Philly, make it a point to stop in.

I was in Boston last night at the M.A.L.E. Center and my gosh it was a packed house. Over 50 people were in attendance. The men were sitting anxiously in their chairs and were very engaging in the conversation. Thank you all so much for coming out and sharing your evening with me. The M.A.L.E. Center provides so many services - HIV/AIDS counseling and prevention, outreach, groups, and workshops. I was there as part of the group's book club. I had an awesome time!

I am back in NYC and getting ready for the weekend. I am looking forward to some other upcoming events I have, especially next week in Detroit. This is my third trip home. My hometown has been showing a lot of love. They keep inviting me back and I have no problem going home and being with fellow Detroiters and my family. Besides, it's Labor Day weekend and everyone will be BBQ'ng. One thing I love about being home in Detroit is that they love to go in the backyard and put meat on the grill. And, I am going to eat at everyone's house.

Katt Williams Knows Something Everyone In Hollywood Knows, But You Don't

This video is from Katt Williams performance on HBO: Katt Williams: Pimp Chronicles 1

The language is classic Katt Williams, so if you are offended, then you should no click on the video. However, for those who can handle foul and offensive language, well, just click on the video. Pay attention to the 2:25 mark of this video:

For those of you who have read my book, Hiding In Hip Hop, then you are very familiar with the down low parties I discuss. They are nothing new to people in Hollywood, but those outside of the circles, it is shocking.

I happen to know a few celebrity people who told me about Katt Williams performance on HBO and his outing of an actor. He wasn't suppose to say anything, but Katt Williams is Katt Williams.

As I mention in my book, a lot of aspiring actors/actresses move to Hollywood hopeful, ready to dive into the Hollywood scene. And, once you begin to hang in certain circles, meet the "right" people, and if you're willing, well, let's just say your career can either flourish or diminish. And, in Hollywood, a new actor/actress with no contacts, resources, or friends, your career will fizzle just as soon as you got to Hollywood.

I Told Ya'! We're Coming, So You Betta Get Ready...

Got you, right!?! This music video and song is "Used to LuvHer" by R&B Soul Singer, Shire. A new artist on SRC/Universal/Motown. Oh, yes, we are coming! The game in the music industry is changing and Shire is setting the fire to an already lit spark.

We got you Shire. The industry is supporting you right now. You got the talent, vibe, look, and hit producing group behind you - MIDI Mafia's new label Family Ties Entertainment and Hot City Music Group.

Now, watch everyone starts trying to jump on the bandwagon. But, I've said it time and time again, a major recording artist/celebrity/actor will be coming "out" very, very soon.

Thanks to sohh.com for breaking the video and story behind Shire.

What I Know For Sure...

Okay, so I get tons of e-mails and messages through my myspace page, facebook, and e-mail address. You can check them out: myspace.com/hidinginhiphop; facebook.com/hidinginhiphop; and hidinginhiphop@aol.com

Mainly I get a lot of questions about life, celebrities, the entertainment business, down low brothers, and other random things. I love the support and appreciation of everyone purchasing my book. I am truly overwhelmed. I am also touched by those who share their most intimate moments and stories with me. I am blown away by the candidness of your lives. Thank you all for sharing with me.

With that, I want to share some things that I have learned over the years from life experiences, working in the entertainment business, and some very special people I talk about in my book, especially Grandma Pearl, Mr. McGhee, and my Aunt Lisa.

1.) If you don't like your job - Quit.

2.) If you don't like where you live - Move.

3.) If you want to work in the entertainment business - Sure, it's a tough business to get into, however, if you move to where the entertainment business is you will have more chances of breaking into the industry. Sitting in your living room hoping, wishing, and wondering will not get you in the business. You got to get up, get out, and do something!

4.) If you are in a relationship where love is not being reciprocated - Leave.

5.) If you feel as if you are giving to much to someone who does not deserve it - Stop.

6.) If you want to make more money - Stop whining and find a job that will pay you what you are worth.

7.) If you are over 25 years of age and still trying to get a record deal - It's time to pick another career.

8.) If you are over 25 years of age and still trying to break into modeling - It's time to pick another career.

9.) If you are over 30 years of age and still trying to break into acting - It's time to seriously think about another career.

10.) If you want to write - Write. Something I learned from this great book, The Artists' Way, "Waiters wait, Writers write, Actors act"

11.) Stop listening to what others tell you what you can't do - They are jealous because you have a dream and can see the "It" factor in you.

12.) If you want to go back to school - Go. Education is the key to life. Besides, you can never stop learning.

13.) If you are living from paycheck to paycheck and complaining why you need more money - You need to seriously take this into consideration - God will not give you more than you can handle. If you can't handle the money you have now, why would God give you more?

14.) You can only depend on yourself and God.

15.) Everyone is not your friend. Nor does everyone deserve to have a starring role in your life.

16.) If you have to ask if someone loves you - They probably don't.

17.) If that someone special in your life lies, cheats, and deceives others they will do it to you.

18.) Love everything about you. When you do, the right person will come along and love you just the same.

19.) Stop giving away your power.

20.) Never take anything personal. Nine times out of Ten it has absolutely nothing to do with you. People generally take their personal opinions, judgements, upsets, and hatred out on others because it is something they are dealing with.

Kanye West is the Man!

THE GUCCI SNEAKER AWARD GOES TO KANYE WEST!

"Open your fucking minds. Open your minds. Be accepting of different people and let people be who they are. You know how many people came to me calling me gay cause I wear my jeans the fresh way? Or because I said hey, dude, how you gonna say 'fag' right in front of a gay dude's face and act like that's ok. That shit is disrespectful. Coming from Chicago, where if you saw somebody that was gay you were supppoed to stay ten feet away. It should be time to break out of the intuitions that I was sayin', the stereotypes, or the fear, the backlash that I would get if you don't believe in what I believe in, acceptin' people for who they are...they're very talented and if they do something special in the world and they're discriminated. I've flown across the world y'all, and I've come back here to tell you — open your minds and live a happier life..." - Kanye West, Speaking out against homophobia recently at his concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

There is something extremely sexy and honorable about a man who speaks his mind. Especially a man who is unafraid and unapologetic about who he is as a man. Despite what you may think of Kanye, he does make a valid point. He uses his celebrity to make a stand against something we all should be brave enough to speak out against - Homophobia. It is absurd that we think so small coming from the Western world.

With that, I present Kanye West with the Gucci Sneaker Award for his grace and vision of being ahead of his colleagues in the Hip Hop game!

Champions - Kanye West

Down Low Hollywood and Hip Hop Superstars Revealed In EURWeb Interview...

Author Terrance Dean was interviewed by Gil Robertson for EUR Web and provided more insider clues as to who may be Hiding In Hip Hop -

The ROBERTSON TREATMENT: On The 'DL' In Hollywood – The Terrance Dean interview
http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur45977.cfm

*We live in a world obsessed with celebrity-- where everyone wants to know who is doing what to whom, when, where and how.

From the tabloids, the internet and 24-hour television, the most intimate details of celebrity life is on front street and has become everyone’s business. Well not every detail.

With his bestselling book, Hiding In Hip Hop – On The Down Low in the Entertainment Industry from Music to Hollywood, celebrity insider and veteran entertainment industry journalist Terrance Dean lifts the lid off of Black Hollywood’s highly secretly “DL” community. Part memoir and part expose’, the red-hot page-turner peels away at the identities and reckless lifestyles of some of entertainment’s biggest stars.

The Robertson Treatment recently spoke with Dean to get the scoop about this hidden community.

Why did you write this book?

I wrote this book to expose the truth about how the entertainment industry goes to great lengths to keep the lives of gay celebrities a secret, even if an artist has the desire to disclose their sexual identity. Many same gender loving men and women of color who are a part of the entertainment industry feel as if they have no voice within a culture that demonizes and dehumanizes them. This book is a testimony of my life and the journey of coming to terms with my sexuality and the power of living into my truth.

Can you offer any clues as to the identity of any well-known stars on the DL?

As I mentioned in my book there is a high-profile rapper/actress, who has been nominated for several awards, including an Oscar, who also has dated a few WNBA players, and a R&B songstress from the early 90’s. Another is an extremely popular male R&B singer who has written for Rhianna, Beyonce, and other great R&B singers, who has broken the mold of superstardom with his popular ballads and signature sound. He’s been seen with beautiful women, but they are cover girls and provide the perfect cover-up for his hidden secret.

Have you ever encountered any well-known star in a compromising situation?

Yes, I have. In a couple of instances I have encountered well-known celebrities in compromising situations. One music producer who has produced several of today’s hottest rappers and singers, who has been featured in numerous Hip Hop magazines and television specials was at a down low sex party. I recognized him at the party and introduced myself. He was very cordial. After a few drinks, the men at the party moved to the bedrooms. I saw the music producer engaged in sex with several men in the middle of an orgy. I’ve been intimate with many A-list actors, rappers, and singers. They are on television, the radio, and have a significant presence in the entertainment industry.

One famous actor/model with a beautiful body and face, who has been photographed in high-fashion pictorials, and has been the face of leading clothing designer’s campaigns, became my bed partner after an intimate evening.

Is there a profile for the kind of man/woman who is on the DL?

Unfortunately there is no profile for the kind of man/woman who is on the down low. They fit in perfectly into the heterosexual environment and no one would ever be able to pinpoint who they are. Being on the down low is being discreet, and un-clockable to the average person. Down low men and women do things in private and in secrecy, and they seek out others who are just at private about their lifestyle. However, I do tell men and women to be discerning of who they are dating. Do not become comfortable and complacent. Many are in relationships with down low men and women and assume they are in heterosexual monogamous relationships. Ask questions of your mate and their sexual behaviors – ask if your man has been with another man, or your woman has been with another woman. Check their e-mails, phones, and close associates who tend to come in and out of their life. There is nothing wrong with being inquisitive of your mate. You have a right to know and if you are not comfortable with the answers you receive, then do not be afraid to walk away from the relationship.

Are you afraid of retaliation?

No, I am not afraid of retaliation. I can’t be afraid of the truth, and if I tell my truth, then I can do anything. If I am fearful, then I would be doing an injustice and disservice to myself, my community, and what God has called me to do.

You mention in the book that you participated in the homophobic behavior to deflect attention away from yourself. Is this book your way of making amends?

Partly, the book is my making amends of my own homophobic behavior to deflect attention away from myself. Many of us - artists, executives, and others in the industry, who have not disclosed their sexuality, will use derogatory language, and abuse toward those who are open and out with their sexuality. I hope this book will bring light to the many men and women who are homophobic and how it prevents a serious dialogue within the black community about sex and sexuality.

Why does the African American community have such a hard time accepting homosexuality?

The African-American community has a hard time accepting homosexuality because of inaccurate information that surrounds the lives of same gender loving people. The images of gay and homosexuality people are often negatively portrayed and presented. Sex and sexuality are seen as taboos in the black community, so we are afraid to have a dialogue about those topics because we might be perceived as sexual deviants. So, we stand by and watch our friends and family members who are gay being ridiculed. Too many of us have stood silently by as the epidemic of HIV/AIDS kills our family members, the pregnancy rate among our teenagers continue to rise, and the irresponsibility of men who create several children with several different women is tolerated. Things are getting better – attitudes are improving, but we have a long way to go.

A Brandy Type of Day....

What's Up People!

It's been a few days since my last post. I am back in NYC and enjoying the beautiful weather, and getting ready for book signings later this week in the Nation's Capital - Washington, DC (Thurs., Aug. 7th - Sat., 9th). If you are in the DC area (VA, MD, DC) definitely make sure to come and check me out.

On Friday, fellow author and blogger, Trent Jackson, had me as a guest on his radio show. I had a blast! You can check out the interview on his blog: www.justasktrent.blogspot.com. Thanks again Trent for the interview. I love your energy. Oh yeah, Trent revealed who "Clay" and "Daisy" are from my book - however, I can neither confirm or deny who they are!

Special shout out to blogger Rod 2.0.

I have a major announcement to make in a few days. Yes, folks, it's about to go down!

Well, I'm having a Brandy type of Sunday - It's all good. I was reminicsing over Brandy's hot songs that were blazing the radio airwaves. We miss you Brandy! Hurry up and give us something new.
